This Week in Arts

By Abby Lass

This Coming Week:

Thursday 3/3 through Saturday 3/5: South Stage is putting on its second show of the season, Urinetown: The Musical. This dark satire of the stereotypical musical examines the social, moral, and political implications of the excesses of a capitalist society and points out the holes in its views on sustainability. Tickets are on sale online at southstage.org and in the cafeteria and theater office.

This Past Week:

Friday 2/26: Newton South’s Jazz Ensemble held their Newton to NOLA fundraiser at Union Street Restaurant. This event, which also included performances from Newton North’s Jazz Ensemble as well as local band Loose Change, was an exceptional display of instrumental mastery and demonstrated to a packed house just how far dedication to your craft can get you. The group will use the proceeds to travel to New Orleans over April break with Newton North. Saturday 2/27: The Newton South Speech Team won sweepstakes at the annual Mardi Gras tournament in Shrewsbury, a feat which could not have been accomplished without a strong display from the entire team. Standout performances include Yuval Dinoor and Rhea Dudani, who received fifth place in Team Improv; Aidan Bassett, who received first place in Original Oratory and second in Extemporaneous; and Shira Abramovich, who received second place in Original Oratory.
