This Coming Week
Tuesday 4/12: Passin’ Time will take place during long advisory for the second time this year. This event gives students the chance to walk around the halls of school and visit different music groups stationed in different locations, including jazz in the cafeteria, a student rock group in the 1000s, Newtones in the 4000s, electric music provided by Mr. Rinaldi in the 3000s second floor, and an instrumental group in the 9000s.
Thursday 4/14: Throughout the whole day, Tertulia will take place in the auditorium. Arguably the best day of the school year, students from all grades are given the chance to showcase their talents in a live-streamed variety show extravaganza. This event commemorates a previous South student named Maxine Chansky, who died in a tragic car accident during her sophomore year. Since she loved the arts, Tertulia was founded to celebrate her memory. Each year without fail, Tertulia has highlighted South students’ creativity and talent and has always been a memorable show. Tertulia is part of South identity, and spots fill up fast, so make sure that your teacher has signed up your class.
Friday 4/15: Newton South’s Asian Student Organization is hosting their annual event at 7 pm in the auditorium. This event, which features performances by South students, is a great way to get immersed in Asian culture– not to mention the free food.
Friday 4/15: Tea Barn, the student-run coffee house event, will be held at 303 Nahanton St in Newton Centre at 7 pm. Held in a real barn, this forum provides great tea and a chance for students to perform for their peers.
This Past Week
Sunday 4/10: Euphonic, an a cappella group featuring Newton South students, performed at Lasell College during a Think Peace benefit. The event honored the memory of Lauren Dunne Astley, a teenager from Wayland whose death has inspired her parents to educate their community about how to prevent dating violence among teenagers. Click here to see their performance.
Wednesday 4/6: At 7:00 pm, North and South’s jazz ensembles performed together at Newton North in order to raise money for their upcoming trip to New Orleans. Sophomore Abigail Miller says that, “it was a unique concert [because] it was different than any other concert we’ve done” in terms of format. First North played, then South, and then the two groups played a piece together. The concert ended with a performance by a professional big band.
Wednesday 4/6: At South, the “Spring Sing” choral concert took place. This concert featured Vocal Ensemble, Newton South Chorale, Madrigals, and Festival Singers, Newton South’s honors choir. The evening also marked the final time that Andy Dimitri, the accompanist for several of the groups, would perform at South.
