As temperatures continue to plunge and the amount of daylight dwindles, the fall sports season is just gaining steam.

Multiple Newton South programs are chasing the postseason as October arrives, with a few garnering key victories over the last week. A few teams look to position themselves for playoff contention as the autumn continues.

The football team improved its record to 3-0 last Friday night with a dominant performance over DCL foe Boston Latin, defeating the Wolfpack 41-7. Junior quarterback Austin Burton made a statement in the team’s first in-conference matchup, tossing five touchdown passes, three of which went to junior tight end Sasha Hoban.

The Lions look to up their season-opening winning streak to four games as they challenge Cambridge on Friday night.

The girls soccer team also finds itself in prime position for a tournament berth. Despite falling to DCL rival Acton-Boxborough on Tuesday, 2-1, South recorded a crucial 4-0 victory over Cambridge last Friday, bringing the team’s record to 6-2.

The group will challenge Concord-Carlisle on Thursday before heading to Somerville on Saturday for an out-of-conference matchup.

Buoyed by a 3-0 romp of Boston Latin on Monday afternoon, the girls volleyball team improved their record to an encouraging .500 entering a contest with Acton-Boxborough Wednesday afternoon. The squad fell to the Colonials, 3-1, however. A home matchup against Cambridge on Friday will grant them the opportunity to improve on their 3-4 mark this season.

Boys soccer also captured a solid performance in the last week, tying Cambridge on Friday in a contest plagued by poor officiating, according to the team. South was unable to carry its momentum into Tuesday’s meeting with Acton-Boxborough, falling 4-0 while watching their record drop to 2-4-1.

The team will play host to Concord-Carlisle on Thursday before facing Bedford at home next Monday.

The field hockey team, fresh off of a victory on September 19th, fell in both of their contests in the last week as their record fell to 1-7-1. The squad dropped a contest against Lincoln Sudbury 5-0 on Friday before falling to Acton-Boxborough on Monday.

The team will have a wealth of practice time to retool their plan of attack before their next game, which will take place next Monday against Ursuline Academy.

The girls cross-country team punctuated an impressive showing at the F. Kelly Invitational on Saturday by capturing second place honors. The golf team fell to Lincoln-Sudbury on Thursday before garnering a convincing win over Bedford on Monday.
