As the weather began to warm up this week, Newton South spring sports teams began concluding their seasons.
On Monday, boys’ lacrosse defeated Cambridge-Rindge and Latin in a thrilling 8-7 battle. The boys needed to winto keep their playoff hopes alive, but they were defeated handly by Weston later in the week, and then lost to Newton North under the lights on Sunday. The boys will finish their season on Monday against Natick.
Meanwhile, tournament bound girls’ lacrosse continued their successful season with a 16-5 rout of Cambridge-Rindge and Latin. Later in the week they fell in a high scoring battle against Weston. The girls wrap up their regular season when they host Belmont on Monday, before heading to the state tournament.
Both track and field teams secured DCL titles on Wednesday in a hard fought DCL championship meet. Those who qualified will move onto to the Divisional Championships next Sunday afternoon in Somerville.
Boys’ volleyball won at home on Senior Night last Wednesday to secure coach Elwell’s 300th career win. Harry Xu had a breakout game with a career high 15 kills. The Lions followed up with a win against Cambridge-Rindge and Latin on Friday behind junior captain Noah Kopf’s 15 kills. The boys travel to Saint John’s on Monday before heading on to the tournament.
Boys’ tennis defeated Concord-Carlisle 3-2 in a fitting send off for the team’s seniors. Jay Maxwell and Gabe Nissenbaum both fell to Lexington in the second round of the MIAA individual state tournament over the weekend.
Tournament bound girls’ tennis lost back to back games this week in tough matchups against Concord-Carlisle and Boston-Latin. The girls travel to Ursuline academy on Monday before hosting Wayland on Tuesday as they look to close out the regular season.
Boys’ baseball got revenge this week in a 8-5 victory over Waltham under the lights on Wednesday after falling to them in dramatic fashion at the beginning of the season. The lions went on to lose 3-2 against Boston-Latin later in the week. The boys’ will begin their final week of games as they travel to Westford Academy on Monday.
Girls’ softball handly defeated Waltham 6-2 on Friday. The girls host Belmont on Tuesday before heading off to the state tournament.
Over the weekend, Newton South senior Kalena Wang placed fourth on the beam at Nationals after making finals in floor, beam and bars.
Outside of Newton South, the Boston Red Sox had an average week, going 3-3 in their series against the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros. This week they take on the Colorado Rockies at home.
The NBA Conference finals continued this week as the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night to take 2-1 lead in the series. Meanwhile in the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers lead the Toronto Raptors 2-1.
