Although this past Wednesday consisted of torrential downpours and cloudy skies, a beacon of hope erupted from the Newton South Girls’ Lacrosse Team as they defeated Acton-Boxborough 18-14, a first for the girls under coach Widrick.
The girls currently hold a record of 6-3 and are looking strong mid-season. This game was one of their highest scoring outings this season, with both teams utilizing lethal offense.
“We got the lead early and were able to hold it together. They definitely scored, but we did too” said senior captain Maddy Yorke.
During the last seven minutes of the game, Acton-Boxborough gained momentum and began to close down the lead. However, South’s persistent offense echoed Acton-Boxborough, securing the victory.
However, it is not only the offense that has played a key role in South’s recent success. Power duo Sophie Szymanski and Charlotte Cadrain have been a brick wall this year on defense, as well as the new starting goalie, Sitapa Jamdee.
“Sitapa has been really playing great and stepping up. She has had many amazing saves which helped us stay in these competitive games,” senior captain Jordan Briney said.
It is clear the girls have been a powerhouse this season, but Acton-Boxborough is widely known as one of the most competitive DCL schools in all athletics. So, the question is, how were the girls able to bring them down? Their answer: determination.
“We knew they weren’t their strongest this year, so we took advantage of that and played our hardest from the start to try and defeat them,” Yorke said.
Although the sweet taste of victory still lingers, the team must look ahead to the remainder of the season and focus on how to continue to raise their level. At mid-season, it becomes crucial for the girls to continue to put more wins in the book in order to make and succeed in the State Tournament, a goal of theirs since the beginning of the season.
“We have room to improve in keeping patience of offense, our transitions and stick skills,” Briney said.
The girls will look to continue their win streak this Friday vs. Waltham in another DCL matchup.
