Chase Blessington, senior captain of the Newton South girls’ lacrosse team, accomplished her first shutout of her high school career this season against Cambridge. Blessington has been on the varsity team since sophomore year and has been a key component to the team’s success her junior and senior years, as the team’s starting goalie.

Denebola had the opportunity to sit down with Blessington recently to discuss the Lions 2017 season.

When did you start playing lacrosse and why?
“I started playing lacrosse in seventh grade and have been playing since then. I started because I needed a spring sport, so I tried it and liked it.”

What position do you play?
“I play goalie. I started playing goalie in eighth grade when I broke my foot and couldn’t run anymore.”

What are your individual and team goals for this season?
“My individual goal was to get a shutout, and I would also like to hit a hundred saves, or maybe more. The team goal is definitely to beat Waltham twice, beat Weston, and hopefully beat a team in the big league.”

How did you train to get your shutout?
“I practiced a lot and worked hard at practice. Also, Coach Widrick gave the goalies a new warm-up to do before every game which has been effective.”

How did it feel to get a shutout and was it your first one?
“It felt really good because it has been a goal since freshman year, and it has never happened, so it felt really good to get it before I graduated.”

Do you have any future plans with lacrosse?
“It depends on where I go to school. I will potentially play intramural or club.”
