The boys’ cross country team came in second in a tri-meet past Wednesday as they beat Cambridge and lost to Lincoln Sudbury before they fell to a talented Acton-Boxborough later in the week.
Despite the team lost in the first, tri-meet, many of the runners got their personal records for Cold Spring at the meet.
South’s top runner, freshman Brett Miller, worked hard for a personal record of 18:02.
“Overall it went well, and it was a good race for the whole team,” Miller said.
Sophomore Ethan Jacunski and Junior Andy Uruci also had strong races and were pleased with their second and seventh place team performance respectively. Uruci’s time of 18:54 was good enough to earn a personal record.
“The meet was pretty decent. I held a good pace, and I felt comfortable enough to have a good kick in the end,” Urici said.
Despite these multiple personal records, the Lions were still outmatched by a strong Warriors team that had a lot of depth and ran competitive races through the entire lineup.
Senior captain Seth Walensky finished third for the Lions. As a senior, it was his last official race at cold spring. Walensky, however, was happy to finish with one of the better races in his career.
“I am very happy because my final race I got my personal record for Cold Spring at 18:10,” he said.
The Lions followed up the tri-meet with a dual meet against DCL rival Acton- Boxborough.
South knew going into the meet that Acton-Boxborough was going to be a difficult competitor, as they challenge for the DCL title every year.
“Acton Boxborough is pretty good. The meet is only 2.5 miles, and Acton Boxborough is not as strong as Lincoln Sudbury [so it should be a close race],” Jacunski said.
The Lions were playing catchup from the beginning of the race as Acton started out extremely fast, pacing the first mile at 5:20.
A large pack of Acton’s boys was ahead of South’s lead pack until freshman Brett Miller pulled ahead and won the race with a time of 14:47.
Miller used the elevation of the course to his advantage as a tactic for passing the pack of boys.
“It was hard to get by the big pack. When we went down a big hill I picked up speed and broke ahead,” Miller stated.
Sophomore Ethan Jacunski came in second for South and fifth overall with a time of 15:02.
“I think I could have continued at this pace for a 5k and I would have achieved my personal record,” Jacunski said.
Captain Seth Walensky finished in third for South, and Junior Shaw Miller finished in fourth. Miller finished with a time of 15:27.
The team ended their official regular season 3-3. The Lions will race at the Twilight Invitational this weekend before the Dual County League Championships next Friday.
