At around 9:48 PM, Simon Stern, normally a quiet, cautious man, decided to step outside his comfort zone. Briefly glancing inside his cabinet at prospects to satisfy his thirst, Stern considered the monotone plastic cup staring back at him- yellow, routine, and dull. It wouldn’t do.

Stern considered his other options for the evening: the gray Thermos he took to his 9-5 job, the Poland Spring bottle waiting in the fridge, and the Hydroflask that somehow broke every Law of Physics and Sound Mechanics known to humankind when it fell. And then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw it: the glass cup.

Stern knew the risks -the glass cup could fall and break- but he didn’t care. Carefully gripping its smooth exterior, Stern filled it ¾ of the way (he was wild, but not wild enough to fill it all the way) and carefully went up the stairs.

Indeed, at around 1:34 AM, our intrepid protagonist felt the twangs of thirst and found himself overjoyed at the sight of the glass cup of water he’d brought. He reached for the cup, but forgetting that his bodily motions were still discombobulated, (he had just woken from deep slumber) tragedy struck. In one swift motion, Stern knocked the glass onto the ground, where it shattered, along with the rest of Stern’s ambitions. The image of the glass crashing onto his hardwood floor burnt itself into Stern’s mind, and Stern never forgot. Our once-lionhearted adventurer never once again stepped outside his comfort zone.
