This Sunday Newton South Girls Track will face off against some of their most elite competitors at the Division One Coaches Invitational Meet. Seniors Emily Bulczynski and Hannah Fraser describe their season as a whole as well as their excitement for this highly anticipated matchup.

How has the season been so far?

Bulczynski: “The season has been great. We were really worried at the beginning of the season about replacing last year’s seniors and getting new kids up to speed, but we had lots of freshmen and new teammates learn a lot and improve a lot, which allowed us to meet our goal of going undefeated in the regular season! We are also a much stronger team than we initially expected and that’s really because everyone worked very hard and put in great effort to get better.”

Fraser: “We went undefeated in the DCL regular season, which was unexpected since we had lost so much talent from our graduating seniors last year, and we did pretty well at the last meet of this size and scale.”

What are your expectations for the meet individually and as a team?

Bulczynski: “I’ve been sick all week, so unfortunately I don’t think that I will be racing at Coaches this weekend. However, we have a bunch of individuals going, and we expect them to do well! This week has been a big workout and strength building week, so people should be ready to make some great personal records.”

Fraser: “Individually, my season has been great. I’ve been hitting personal records in every Dual meet and trying new events such as the mile and the 300, which I never thought I would run. I think the team will run well too because we have had so much training in preparation for this meet.”

Who are the runners (underclassman and upperclassman) that we should be looking out for?

Bulczynski: “ Definitely look out for Caroline Barry in the two mile because she is expected to win. Also look out for Lucy in the mile because she is the second seed behind Sam Friborg from AB who is an amazing runner, but Lucy definitely has the potential to beat her, which means it should be an intense race. Also look out for Addie Marple because for the past few meets she has been improving a lot! Additionally, look out for Amanda Smith and Danya in the shotput and for Megan Walsh in the high jump.”

Fraser: “Going into coaches, you should look out for underclassmen Lucy Jenks and Addie Marple in the mile. They’re both very fast and capable runners and with Caroline Barry in their race they could run huge personal records.”

Who will be the tough competitors, and how will you try and beat them at such a large meet?

Bulczynski and Fraser: “Our toughest competition will mostly be the same as a normal DCL meet. LS, AB, CC and some other schools that aren’t in the DCL that are tough competitors are Lowell and Newton North. I think we can beat them if we all have really strong performances and everyone goes into the meet with confidence”
