South Basketball Faces Cancellations

The last couple of weeks have been turbulent, to say the least, with respect to South’s basketball game scheduling. Both the JV and the Varsity Boy’s Basketball teams have had to deal with cancellations due to COVID-19, leading to missed practices and games.

The JV basketball team was hit particularly hard after one player tested positive for COVID-19, invoking an automatic fourteen-day quarantine for the entire team, including coaches. This caused the team to miss two games. JV starting shooting guard and star player, Sam Hegarty, had a lot to say on the matter: “At the end of the day, it’s just sad that all these players don’t get to play the sport they love. These guys live for the game. The news really hit the team pretty hard.”

The varsity basketball team faced a similar situation recently as well, although they only had to miss one game and did not have a mandated quarantine.

Although the situation that all NSHS sports teams are facing is not ideal, it is better than nothing. The reality is that these will not be the last sports cancellations at South. Football and other “flex-season” sports are starting up in just a short few weeks, and many spring sports will be playing later this year, so it’s important to keep a positive attitude and stay safe!
