The Newton South Lions followed up an impressive first week of action by adding more victorious performances out on the fields and courts this week.

Senior captain Jamyre Soberanis powered the football team to a 29-20 win in the Lions’ home opener on Saturday. Soberanis rushed for two touchdowns and racked up over 200 yards on the ground in the victory. The football team (2-0) will look to continue their success when they travel to Boston Latin on Friday night.

The girls’ volleyball team had a tough week, dropping two matches to DCL foes. The Lions fell to Concord Carlisle, 3-1, on the road before losing 3-0 against Westford on Monday. Standing at 2-3, the volleyball team will look to improve with upcoming matches against Boston Latin and Acton-Boxboro.

Girls’ soccer defeated Westford 2-0 in an away matchup on Friday, which propelled the team to a 5-0 record to start the season. The team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday, falling 1-0 to Lincoln-Sudbury. South (5-1) looks to rebound against Cambridge this Friday, hoping to parlay early season momentum into a deep playoff run.

Both boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams came up short against L-S in their first dual meets of the season on Monday at Cold Spring Park. The duo of senior captain Rebecca Grusby and junior Clare Martin finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the girls’ race, but the team ultimately came up short in a 26-31 loss. The boys’ team fell 15-52. Cross-country returns to DCL action on Wednesday in a tri-meet versus Wayland and Waltham.

South field hockey came up with its first victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Brookline 2-1. Senior Sabrina Stacks had both goals to power the Lions to a huge win. The Lions (1-1-5) lost 6-0 against Westford on Monday, and will visit L-S on Friday.

Newton South’s golf team (2-4) came up short in a tri-match against Acton-Boxboro and Weston. They face off against DCL rivals L-S in their next match on Thursday.

The boys’ soccer team earned a key 1-0 win at L-S on Monday afternoon. Having lost to Westford 3-0 on Friday, the Lions were in need of a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. Senior captain Daniel Sellers scored the winner in the second half, propelling South to a 2-3 record. Newton South now has a chance to improve to .500 as they take on Cambridge on Friday.

All South teams will look to continue winning this week as game play starts ramping up.
