Spring sports have taken control of South recently as all sports are midway through the season.

The boys’ tennis team defeated Bedford 4-1 after falling to Lincoln Sudbury 4-1 in a close match where all matches went to three sets. The Lion’s currently rest at 4-4. The boys look for revenge against Acton-Boxborough this Thursday after falling to the Colonials earlier in the season. The team is also scheduled to face Boston Latin and Cambridge.

The girls’ tennis team squeaked by Lincoln Sudbury 3-2 behind a three set win by sophomore Kayla Schwartz. The Lion’s have four DCL matchups scheduled for this week including Boston Latin, Cambridge, Wayland, and Acton-Boxborough.

The baseball team now sits at 1-6 after falling to Weston on a walk off home run in extra innings, 7-8. They later lost to Westford after holding a run two run lead going into the seventh. The young Lion’s team is focused on remaining mentally strong as they hope to have a good second half of the season to clinch a spot in the tournament.

The Lion’s softball team went 1-2 this past week after losing to DCL rivals Concord-Carlisle and Boston Latin despite strong pitching from senior captain Kim-An Quinn. South bounced back later in the week as they beat Bedford.

The girls’ lacrosse team is currently 5-5 after a dominating 19-4 win against Belmont. The Lions later fell to 12-10 to Weston in a very close contest.

Boy’s lacrosse suffered a tough 13-5 loss to Weston. The Lion’s currently rest at 3-5 as they are one of the younger teams in state. The boys are set to host Boston Latin on Thursday which should be a gritty conference matchup.

After placing eighth at the Rhode Island Invitational, the boys’ volleyball team currently sit at 7-4. The Lions lost to North Quincy 3-2 in a very close match. They team is set to host DCL foe Westford and Arlington on Wednesday and Friday respectively.

The boys’ and girls’ track teams have to wait to race as their meet vs Acton-Boxborough was cancelled on Tuesday. However, the team is using this time to prepare for the State Relay Meet which is scheduled for next Saturday.

Outside of Newton, the Celtics’ season has come to end after a 3-2 series loss to Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs. Despite two big home wins, Boston couldn’t muster much offense in Game 6. However, the C’s look poised for a successful season next year as they currently hold eight picks in this year’s upcoming draft.

The Red Sox are red hot as they have won six out of their last seven including two to their rivals, the New York Yankees. Slugger David Ortiz is off to a strong start to his last year as he is currently hitting .321 with five homeruns and 19 RBIs. The Sox are currently .5 games behind Baltimore for first place in the AL East.

After having no first round pick because of the Deflategate controversy, the Patriots had a big week in the NFL draft. Notable picks include Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones (No. 60), Guard Joe Thuney (No. 78) from NC State to join an offensive line that was atrocious in the playoffs last year, along with possible heir to Tom Brady, Jacoby Brissett (No. 71). New England also drafted Georgia wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell (No. 112) who brings a great off the field story to New England. Mitchell allegedly could only read at a middle school level when he got to the University of Georgia, where he joined a book club where he was taught to enjoy the hobby. Mitchell has now written a children’s book, The Magician’s Hat and is an advocate for kids reading.
