As school began this week, Newton South sports teams took to the fields for their first week of competition.

Girls’ soccer dismantled their opponents, winning their first three games in convincing fashion. The girls capped off the week with a 7-0 win at home against somerville on Saturday night. On Monday the girls travel to Boston Latin to try and keep their unbeaten streak alive.

Meanwhile the boys’ soccer team battled back this week following a slow start to the season with a loss to Wayland at home on the first day of school.

On Thursday, the boys found themselves trailing again 3-1 at half time in Waltham. In the second half the boys stormed out scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes, and then holding on for the 4-3 win on the road. They end the week at .500 and will look to improve on Monday when they host Boston Latin.

Both cross country teams participated in a relay meet this week to kick off their season. The girls three by three kilometer team of senior captain Katie Collins, juniors Emily Bulczynski, and Caroline Barry dominated the field by winning the girls section with lots of time to spare.

The boys elected to rest their top runners and give their younger members some experience on the course. Both teams will have their work cut out for them as they host DCL rival Acton-Boxboro on thursday in their first dual meet of the season.

Football got off to a slow start this week in a 49-23 loss to Lexington. The Lions will have a tough week ahead as they hope for a better result next weekend against Brookline.

The golf team also lost this week in their dual county opener to Acton-Boxboro. They will look to redeem themselves against Concord-Carlisle on Monday.

Girls’ volleyball also had a strong start to the season 3-0 wins over both Wayland and Waltham this week. Yet to lose a set, the girls will host DCL powerhouse Concord-Carlisle on Monday.

Field hockey got off to a slow start this week, as they lost to a tough Weston team 6-0. On Monday, they look to bring home a win as the face Arlington-Catholic at their home opener.
